| Who
is the service for? BATIAS
works with people with learning disabilities, supporting them to
speak out for themselves and make their voices heard.
Who are BATIAS?
BATIAS is a voluntary
organisation in Essex, which started in 1992 to provide advocacy services to
people living in Basildon and Thurrock. Since then, our service has
expanded, to support people who live in Brentwood, Southend, Castle
Point and Rochford. What
is a learning disability?
A learning disability means that a person's ability to learn new
things is
impaired. Sometimes a person with a learning disability will also
have other physical, sensory or behavioural disabilities or
impairments. The
services BATIAS
provides: Formal
Advocacy - where an Advocate
supports a client with a crisis situation e.g. housing issue, money
problems or a review meeting. Self
Advocacy - we have a variety of
groups with different themes to support clients to gain confidence and
to experience new activities, e.g. drama, sports and social groups. Citizen
Advocacy - where a volunteer
supports the client to take part in social activities or to learn new
skills e.g. going shopping
Stars
in the Sky - a friendship & dating
agency for people with learning disabilities. There is a yearly
membership fee which helps to cover the cost of some events.
Members are invited to events each month. It may be the cinema,
a meal at a restaurant, a picnic in the park or ten pin bowling.
There are lots of things to do.
Café4U - Batias has
a training scheme for people with learning disabilities. It is
based in Thurrock in the Thameside Complex and run as a community café
open to customers. Trainees are supported to learn new skills,
train for food hygiene certificates and develop confidence in a real
working environment.
