| What is
CITIZEN ADVOCACY ?
It is a Volunteering Role
Sometimes people with
learning difficulties can find it hard to make new friends or to do
as many things as they would like. A Citizen Advocate is a volunteer
who can support the person to meet new people and go to places such as
cinemas, night classes or groups in their local community. The
person may prefer to stay at home and the Citizen Advocate visits
for a cup of tea and a chat.
The Citizen Advocate will,
over the years, get to know the person with a learning disability
well and will support them to speak up for themselves. They may also
be able to help with specific problems, like a formal advocate.
BATIAS has lots of volunteers who support the
charity in different roles including:
Trustees - who are part
of the BATIAS Trustee committee. They oversee the running of
BATIAS making sure that we comply with Charity Law.
Citizen Advocates - who
are partnered with a person with a learning disability to support them
in the community.
Group Supporters -
volunteers attend the groups to support with the running of activities
e.g. arts and crafts or supporting an individual to join in the sports
activities.
