| What is FORMAL
ADVOCACY ?
It is when a paid member of BATIAS staff supports the person through a problem or
crisis.
For example:
- having to make choices
about moving to a new home
- having enough money to
live on
- getting the right help if
the person is unwell
- having difficulty being
heard at a review or special meeting such as a case conference
The formal advocate will
listen to the person helping them to make as many choices for
themselves and to gain the confidence to speak out. This can be
especially helpful when the person with the learning disability,
staff, family or carers find they cannot agree about the best action
to take.
