SPORTS ADVOCATE

BATIAS has undertaken a new contract for Sports Advocacy.  This entails an advocate supporting people with learning disabilities to access and undertake sporting activities in their local community and through arranged events.  This may include people with limited communication, behavioural or physical difficulties.

The Main Duties of the Sports Advocate are:

  • To work with people with learning disabilities and to identify, set up and run a range of sporting activities that people have expressed an interest in trying

  • To empower people through informed decision making and confidence building to try new and different activities

  • To ensure that equal opportunities and human rights are upheld

  • To promote self determination

  • To provide support which is person centred

HEALTH ACCESS CHAMPIONS

The Monday Self-Advocacy group, often liaises with the Health Access Champions. At their meeting a few weeks ago a question and answer session was videoed with everyone’s permission. SEPT subsequently used this video for quality assessment. The video won the GOLD quality award. The video was used at the award ceremony and mainly featured the self-advocacy group. It is hoped to get a copy of this to show at the BATIAS AGM on 14th November.

Well done to the participants who have grown in confidence so much in order to raise questions and digest the answers or, based on first hand experience, solve the questions themselves.
